sometimes i really wonder if they remember that students are human beings too. with emotions and breaking points.
Going to music school is great for so many reasons including the opportunity to create and experience music with people that share your passion. However, I’ve noticed something so often that I find it both frustrating and upsetting. Musicians go out with friends, talk to people they know, do activities… but they don’t TALK, DO, OR THINK about literally anything that doesn’t involve music. I guess it’s fine for them, but it just disturbs me so deeply that people are so absorbed in music that they can’t manage their lives in a way that doesn’t incorporate music into absolutely every part of it. It’s great to share that passion with someone, and it can definitely be a way to start a friendship - but you CAN’T maintain a true, meaningful friendship and let it grow if the only focus/common ground is music. At least that’s what I think. I hope this doesn’t make me a “bad musician.” Actually, scratch that - I know it doesn’t. I just have a life, a lot of interests, people I care about. I love music, but I don’t need or want it to take charge of all aspects of my life. That’s not me.
